SAFETY AND SECURITY
Your safety and security is important to UT Southwestern. Your supervisors are responsible for insuring that you have safe working conditions and equipment. However, being safe involves more than just having safe working conditions--it involves your participation. You must participate in safety awareness and be constantly on the alert for unsafe conditions or any situation that may lead to an injury to you, other employees, patients, or guests. You will be provided with and expected to know and observe all the safety rules relevant to your job and work area. Procedures for dealing with a variety of emergency situations can be found in the front of the UT Southwestern Faculty and Staff Telephone Directory, and are reproduced in the Appendix. It is important that you become familiar with any emergency instructions or procedures posted for your department and with all exits from your work area. To insure a safe working environment, report any unsafe condition or accident to your supervisor, observe all safety rules, and exercise reasonable care while carrying out your duties.
If you are involved in an accident or suffer an on-the-job injury, you must notify your supervisor immediately or as soon as practical, and follow the appropriate procedures for obtaining required medical care. If your injury is serious or requires emergency medical attention, call the University Police emergency number (648-8911) or have someone call for you. University Police will arrange for an appropriate medical response.
In the event a co-worker or other person is injured or becomes seriously ill, do not attempt to move the individual (unless it is absolutely essential to their safety). Call the University Police emergency number (648-8911) for assistance.
University Police
University Police provide security, traffic control, and emergency and related services for UT Southwestern. Officers patrol the campuses 24 hours a day and can be contacted to respond to emergency situations--such as fires or injuries--by calling the emergency number 648-8911 or, for routine security matters, by calling 648-2081. Telephones located inside campus elevators are connected directly to the University Police dispatch office. University Police can also be contacted 24 hours a day by pressing a button at the entrance or exit gates of parking lots and garages or on emergency call boxes identified by blue lights.
Services available include assistance in starting stalled cars, unlocking offices, or unlocking your vehicle if you should lock your keys inside. At night, officers will escort you to your car upon request. Electric marking pencils are available for marking state property with the University Police identification number, and for use in marking an individual's personal property as protection against theft. A brochure providing detailed information on services may be obtained by contacting University Police.
